Dynamic Duo: Entrepreneurship and the Gig Economy

About

The Workforce System Strategies community includes resources featuring the gig economy and entrepreneurship that may benefit the workforce system. The resources cited below describe strategies for supporting entrepreneurship as a means to reemployment, the gig economy’s impact within a state, and the effects of entrepreneurship training programs.

Impacts for Supporting Self-Employment as a Reemployment Strategy
The Self-Employment Training (SET) pilot program tested strategies for supporting dislocated workers interested in starting their own businesses, including case management, technical assistance, and seed capital up to $1,000. Three primary findings from the study were that SET led to the greater receipt of personalized assistance and seed capital, that SET produced sustained increases in self-employment activity, and that SET may have been particularly effective in promoting self-employment among new entrepreneurs.

The Gig Economy and Florida's Workforce System
CareerSource Florida commissioned a comprehensive study on the potential impacts of the emerging gig economy on Florida’s workforce system. This report synthesizes the results of the research undertaken to further CareerSource Florida’s knowledge about the gig economy and the potential workforce, education, and economic development implications for the state. The report covers the following topics: the definition of the gig economy, characteristics of gig workers, the business and industry side of the gig economy, Florida’s gig economy, workforce partner perspectives, and policy and programmatic considerations. A key finding was that Florida’s workforce partners are aware the future of work is changing, and non-traditional work arrangements, including gig economy positions, are more likely to continue to grow and expand their share of the overall labor market.
