Evaluation of the Aging Worker Initiative

About

Assesses the Aging Workers Initiative, which aimed to build the capacity of the public workforce investment system to serve older individuals.

The Aging Workforce Initiative (AWI) funded 10 grantees to develop model skill development and employment services for older workers. This evaluation assesses the success of AWI grantees in developing services to meet the needs of aging workers, identifies factors that support or hinder project success, and gleans lessons to improve the ability of the public workforce investment system to serve older workers. Major Findings and Recommendations

“Among the service features that appeared to be particularly well-suited for older workers were assistance with career planning and the provision of personalized support continuing throughout the service period. To provide these supports, the AWI projects used a combination of one-on-one counseling and group workshops. They found that serving older workers in small groups made it possible to combine staff support with peer support and appeared to improve worker confidence. Another practice that may warrant further study is the creation of short-term training opportunities for older workers, lasting three to six months” (p.ES-18). (Abstractor: Author)
