Healthcare: Pathway Programs, Sector Strategies, and Opportunity Grants for High Growth Industry
About
The Workforce System Strategies community contains resources to help workforce practitioners prepare individuals for gainful employment in the high-demand healthcare sector. The resources below describe the impacts from a patient care training program, results of sector strategies used to prepare students for healthcare jobs, and outcomes of grants focused on preparing low-income individuals for employment in the healthcare field.
Madison Area Technical College's Patient Care Pathway Program: Three-Year Impact Report
This report documents the impacts of the Patient Care Pathway Program (PCPP), run by the Madison Area Technical College, three years after random assignment. The Pathways for Advancing Careers and Education project aims to help low-skilled adults access and complete occupational training in the in-demand healthcare sector. This research was undertaken to evaluate whether PCPP led to impacts on credential attainment, earnings, employment, and other life outcomes. Analyses indicate that after three years, the program increased enrollment in college occupational training, but it did not increase receipt of college credentials, entry into career-track employment, average quarterly earnings, or family economic well-being.
Nine Year Gains: Project QUEST’s Continuing Impact
Project QUEST provides comprehensive support to help low-income adults earn postsecondary credentials and access well-paying jobs in strong sectors of the local economy. This report outlines the results from a randomized controlled trial study of Project QUEST's nine-year impacts on the earnings of individuals seeking training for healthcare jobs. The study documents strong evidence of the potential of sector strategies and comprehensive efforts to increase community college completion among low-income adults. Major findings included large, statistically significant earnings impacts over the nine-year follow-up period. Program graduates moved out of poverty and into the middle class, earning an average of $46,580 in the final year of the study. Participants over 34 years old and those with children experienced the greatest benefit from participating in Project QUEST.
