Central Texas Futures Project Conceptual Model

About

Presents the conceptual model of the project, which follows the progress of Central Texas high school seniors as they make the critical transition from high school to postsecondary education and the labor market.
“The Central Texas Student Futures Project is a research partnership of the Ray Marshall Center and ten Central Texas independent school districts. Through student surveys and linked administrative records, the project follows the progress of Central Texas high school seniors as they make a transition from high school to postsecondary education and the labor market. The purpose of this project is to provide longitudinal research on how a variety of educational, personal, and financial factors are related to success in higher education and the force” (p.1). Major Findings and Recommendations

• More research is necessary to examine the initial postsecondary employment pathway (p.17). • Individual student variables that yield negative effects on college student success include being a non-Asian minority, male, low-income, Limited English Proficient, smoker, ADHD, depressed, or obese. Conversely, being Asian yields positive effects on college student success (p.7). • Pre-high school experiences that yield positive effects on college student success include high quality preschool and completing high school coursework. Poor academic performance and changing two or more times from the first through eighth grades yields negative effects on college student success (p.8). • High school setting and program variables that yield positive effects on college student success include small class size, high quality teachers, and quality of classroom instruction (p.9). • Factors promoting persistence (i.e., commencement of second year of studies) in postsecondary education include parental financial support, parental postsecondary experiences, and GPA (p.15).
